ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
Concept & theme
Trick of the Tail is an animated underwater light installation that reminds us of amazing stories of lives we can not live.
The underwater light installation Trick of the Tail is a piece of animated forms which express the movement of a tail. The shape of the tail is reminiscent of the one we know from The Little Mermaid at Langelinje. The installation visualizes the movement of a mermaid, like a tail swimming away from life on earth, to a natural underwater habitat where other mermaids live.

Audience experience
A luminous animated tail in a swimming motion. From the water, the quay and possibly the bicycle bridge, one can observe an underwater lighting and visually moving outline of a tail consisting of several LED strips in a warm color. The tail lights up, moves and then disappears again. The tail movement can be seen at intervals and in various timed animations. The outline with the LED strips emphasizes the imaginary existence of mermaids living in and around the port of Copenhagen. The luminous tail underwater is about 1.7 m long, 1.25 m wide and protrudes about 1.5 m in depth.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Arthur Maria Steijn, has a background in the electronics and art academy (MFA) in installation art, is an associate professor at the Department of Visual Design at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen and works as an independent designer in performing arts and exhibition design (arthursteijn.dk). Since 1995 he has designed video and animation for both experimental and more commercial dances, theater, musicals and operas, among others for the musical “Midt om Natten” which plays in 2021. Arthur and Associate Professor Jakob Ion Wille are working on the final phase of an artistic development project “Flash Forward ”on future scenarios, supported by the Royal Academy. For the Copenhagen Light Festival 2019, Arthur produced animation for video projection mapping for van der Zaag’s work “Windows of Light” in Nikolaj Kunsthal. Speaking of light, Arthur has for many years been preoccupied with the sun and how mankind, through sunlight, arranges time on earth. He is preparing an early 2021 launch of a new series of indoor and outdoor sundials, designed for your specific location, see solur.dk (online from February 10, 2021).

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
“The Ice is Melting at the Pøules” is a fragment of an overall art project of the same name, which premiered at the North Atlantic House during the Copenhagen Light Festival 2018 and since has been around the world – most recently it was shown at the Scheepvaart Museum in Amsterdam during the Amsterdam Light Festival last winter. 

This new fragment consists of light shining through meltwater from the Greenland ice sheet, extract of blue cornflower and the herald of spring blue anemone, and crude oil.  It will create an organic work of light on the facade of the historic building Harsdorffshus on Kongens Nytorv – a building that previously housed the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Crude oil comes in many forms and colors and often it is far from the tarlike substance we see in Hollywood films. Crude oil from Texas used in this work has a beautiful golden color. The meltwater comes from Kangerlussuaq in Greenland and the incompatibility of oil and melt water underlines the complexity in, both the marvels that oil has brought upon the world in terms of development and how it has helped raise the standard of living of millions of people, but at the same time it underlines the ongoing dilemma: How dependent we still are on oil and the obvious fact, that it is one of the biggest contributors to man made climate change.

Reading the latest research on observed ice-sheet losses and seeing what is happening in Greenland and around the globe because of climate change is devastating. The title of the overall artproject refers to former foreign minister of Denmark Villy Søvndal whom in 2009 proclaimed “The Ice Is Melting at the Pøules”. His unfortunate pronunciation went worldwide and overshadowed the message itself. Which was, and somehow still is, significant for the climate debate in Denmark and worldwide. There is a tendency to play the man instead of the ball.

This fragment of THE ICE IS MELTING AT THE PØULES tells the story of the 8 million liters of ice melting – each second!

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
The dragons and their tails, which wind around the tower on Børsen, grow wings of light when a veil (SLØR) waves out of the historic tower and blows a wind of change over the building and inner Copenhagen.

The angle and formation of the light columns is based on the Fibonacci sequence and if special attention is paid, you may be lucky to see the dragons strike a blow with their new set of wings.

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
In Japanese culture the crane is a mystical creature that is said to live for a thousand years. They have come to represent good fortune and longevity, a symbol of hope and healing through challenging times. 

The artwork was inspired by reports of animals roaming urban areas and venturing into locked-down cities around the world. Many were actually fake news but there have been a lot of genuine sightings of wild animals becoming more bold and curious, exploring the empty streets of the world’s largest cities. Animals tend to exist in parts of cities we don’t really inhabit, existing on the periphery as an unseen presence, something like ghosts.  

The artworks are faithful representations of origami cranes. They are built from folded 4.5mm natural recycled polypropylene. The internal structural elements are created using folding techniques found in origami. The internal LED lights illuminate the entire body of the cranes from within, acting as glowing lanterns.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Studio Vertigo is a collaboration between Lucy McDonnell and Stephen Newby who work internationally to create light installations and sculpture. They create work that questions the relationship between objects, viewers and their environment. Last year their work was commissioned for Amsterdam Light Festival and Lumiere Durham, DNLights, Nightfall and Uppsala Light Festival in Sweden.

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
The Tree of Light is an interactive light installation created with the idea of inspiring exploration and curiosity in its visitors. Inspired by the way trees gather energy through their roots, the design of the installation consists of 5 pressure pads with which one can control the light going up the trunk of the tree. There are multiple ways one can interact with the installation and multiple effects that can be triggered based on the way you interact with it. How do you unlock all the secret effects? Discover that yourself by visiting the Tree of Light located right next to Nikolaj Kunsthal.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
The installation was created in collaboration between Sany Ivanova and Anders Nissen. 

Sany is a Bulgarian designer that has long been fascinated with interactive art. Being a Medialogy graduate, she has a background of computer programming, electronics and design which throughout the years, she has implemented in various projects ranging from computer graphic simulations for art-documentaries and commercials, and music instruments to interactive light installations and games.

Karen T takes us into a transforming world of colors and graphics, people and animals, day and night with star images…in a contrasting scale. A cyclical tale, from dawn to dawn. A human time journey in images and sound. A luminous frame story that continues over and over again. Through the years.

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
An endless look Fata Morgana is a contemplative sculpture that interacts with the viewers while the reflection is repeatedly integrated on itself varying depending on its position in the space and the elements that surround it. The Fata Morgana installation is inspired by an optic illusion called by the same name; a complex mirage that could produce subjective illusions composed by superposed images; but in that case the induced perceptions breath their own light and sound, creating superposed images not only by the light reflected but the light and vibration that itself is spreading. The mirage is an optic phenomenon trigged by the deviation of the luminous beams due to the overlap of the air layers in different temperatures. In fact, it is a rare propagation of light in an environment where the temperature, the pressure and humidity do not change vertically as usual. The deviation of these light rays gives us the impression of seeing objects in places where they are not. And they can deform the image observed. We can classify mirages in 3 categories: superior mirages, the inferior ones and Fata Morgana, the most complex optical illusions consisting of different superposed images. Pictures produced by an optical illusion are subject to interpretation. For instance, the inferior mirages usually have an aquatic appearance, meanwhile Fata Morgana illusions could resemble castles, mountains or other complex elements. Fata Morgana is a collaboration between Desilence and Bragt&Galmez.

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
Craving for our neighbour’s greener grass has been known since the beginning of time. A vibrant and enviable life, apparently lived to perfection by another, makes our own life seem less spectacular and exciting. The drive that causes people today to compare themselves and compete with others, even to envy others, is nurtured by SoMe and consumerism, so that the lustrous experiences and bright highlights of other people’s lives are perceived by outsiders as the whole story.

A bridge can be seen as a symbol of transition and connection, making it possible to cross something otherwise impassable. A bridge takes one from one green patch to another. 

Our installation plays with the idea that Lille Langebro – as an actual bridge between Copenhagen City and Christianshavn – can act as a symbol of connection from one neighbour’s green grass to another’s. 

“The grass is always greener …?” invites festival guests to try it out for themselves, and see if the grass really IS greener on the other side.

Step out onto the bridge. Take a look.

Perhaps the “grass” is actually greenest right there, where you are!

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Tokyo Blue has existed since 2011 and comprises four members with widely differing backgrounds in art, technology and the humanities.

We have in common that we all work professionally, and on a daily basis, with light and space. Our shared fascination with colour and its ability to create sensual experience is our fundamental wellspring. We work and experiment with the complexity of color and are particularly interested in the interplay of colour, light, space, surface and material. Our installations often take an actual area or architecture as the starting point. Light and color are woven in with the narrative, intentions and/or historical layers that are associated with the place. The normal everyday becomes transformed into imaginative space, where the senses are stimulated and the mind is challenged.

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
The purpose of the installation is to create a personalised sensation through the synchronised audio-visual experience by letting the guest incorporate their own music to the piece. From the interactive intent of the installation. It allows the spectator to be fully immersed in their tunes as they have never been before.

The installation ‘Synchronised Symphony’ takes place at the Christianshavn side under the bridge, Knippelsbro (Knippelsbrogade 10). When the festival begins there will be send out a code you can join from your mobile phone, where you will be able to wish a song of yours, on queue for it to play in Synchronised Symphony.

The installation provides a visual representation of the music choosen by coloring the instruments with visuel beats. Stay up to date with the festival as we are in the mids of planning some events in combination with the installation.

Mankind has always been fascinated by the stars which have inspired science-fiction, religion, clairvoyance and astronomy. Whatever interpretation you give it, L’ETOILE, a 3-D light art installation pays tribute to the stars which have formed a discreet backdrop to our world since the beginning of time, since man first stared in wonderment at the night sky. LUX sets out to recreate that bright spot in the night sky that man has observed for millennia. It represents a the first and only source of light man have ever seen. Taking up this symbolic figure, LUX designs a gigantic 3D star illuminating cold white branches which seem to merge or multiply depending on where you stand. The light sculpture, minimalist and technically innovative invites visitors to contemplate and return to the fundamentals of light accompanying their walk through the city at night.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
LUX is a duo of light artists originating from France composed of Simon Chevalier and Lucile Cassassolles. Coming from graphic design, LUX brings a new approach of light art. Symbols, typographical characters and graphic elements, Simon & Lucile applies this vision of 2D design in their 3D creations. Inspired by science fiction and primitive, brutalist art, they experiment by displaying large-scale, repetitive geometric shapes to create sober, highly-precise graphic sculptures. Considering light, in all its forms, as a proper material to work with and a main contemporary form of expression and thanks to constant monitoring of technological progress, they can imagine original light sculptures and manage each stage of projects : design, programming, production and set-up. Their first contribution to the Festival of Lights of Lyon « Fête des Lumières » in 2018 was an important step forward for the young duo of artists. In 2019 and 2020, LUX participated in several events worldwide : Vinterljus Light festival in Sweden, Luminale Biennale of Light Art in Frankfurt and Dubaï Design Week in the United Arab Emirates.

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
Infinity Wells is an art installation consisting of six concrete wells placed near the water of Copenhagen. As baptismal fonts the wells encourage its viewers to experience a personal baptism in the dark. Each well represents a period of a human life. Birth, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and death. When a viewer approaches a well, the well comes to life, and down in the water the viewer experiences a special designed theme of light and sound. By looking down in all of the wells people will reflect on the whole circle of life. When the circle is complete the viewer can go on and enjoy the feeling of rebirth.

Louis Poulsen is one of the main sponsors of the Copenhagen Light Festival for the fourth year in a row. The annual Light Festival will take place in Copenhagen on 5-27 February.

Louis Poulsen has teamed up with Jakob Kvist to create ‘Mangfoldighedens Porte’ (Gates of diversity), a spectacular, dynamic and colourful facade lighting installation around Kuglegården. The lighting installation takes its cues from the past, present and the future of Kuglegården. With the use of 26 LED spotlights, the facades and gates of the historical buildings are illuminated to form the framework of the lighting installation.

Visit the exhibition and explore the rich history of the architecture and buildings at Kuglegården narrated by the colour transitions in the lighting.

Jakob Kvist (1985), Lighting Designer
Jakob Kvist is an internationally renowned and awarded lighting designer, doing temporary and permanent multidisciplinary works in the field between art, design, architecture and performance. Jakob has previously been featured at Roskilde Festival, Trailerpark festival, Frost Festival, Copenhagen Light Festival, Strøm, Festival, Nikolaj Kunsthal, Roskilde Kommune, Helsingør Kommune, Helsingør Kommune, Københavns Kommune, Kulturby Aarhus and the Royal Danish Theatre. He’s been multidisciplinary projects with artist such as MØ, Phlake, Cph Phil, Den Sorte Skole, Bisse, When Saints Go Machine, WhoMadeWho and Mike Sheridan. Jakob was recently nominated for the Danish Lighting Award 2019 for the permanent exhibition Smartphonemania, was featured on the cover of renowned Roof Magazine in 2018,  has been featured the in the book “Superlux, Smart Light Art, Design and Architecture for Cities”, and received “event of the year” 2014 from Politiken, for the multidisciplinary work Panorama at Tietgenkollegiet.

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
Solaris is an interactive light installation created around the concept that art feeds art. With a focus on rethinking both tangible and intangible elements and their interplay, the installation consists of a golden sphere, built up of twelve drum cymbals and an accompanying soundscape composed by Martine Francisca Miller.

Located in Klostergården the installation will hang as a golden sun and fill the old neoclassical passage with rays of stars and dynamic shadows as the light pulsates to the immersive soundscape and transforms waves into pure synergy. All creating an alluring atmosphere that will disrupt the viewers usual perception and offer a new and deeper experience. Thus, the installation breathes new life into the cymbals and transforms the previous sound and rhythm into new light. Art feeds art.

Camilla Brix Andersen is a multifaceted artist (b. 1993, Singapore) who received her BA in Art and Technology from Aalborg University in 2018 and is currently pursuing a PB in Graphic Design at The Danish School of Media and Journalism – a background that feeds Brix’s practice exploring the intersection between art and design. With a broad body of work encompassing light installations, visual art and graphics Brix explores new ways of understanding and utilizing materials, as well as the properties of light and shadow.

Sara Ki Noguera Plans is an artist currently working on a series of artworks that send out a call for action towards preserving and taking care of our beautiful planet Earth. Interconnection is one of them, and it has been created together with the artist Jonathan Ki Lindhult. This installation immerse visitors into a magical forest abundant with one of their most attractive fruiting bodies: the bioluminescent mushrooms. 

While walking through this wonderland, visitors are accompanied by experimental music created for this special installation by the sound artist Anton Helmersson. 

This handcrafted installation combines different disciplines to create a magical experience and awake your interest into the mysterious world of fungi kingdom, which is essential to life on Earth and may in fact hold the key to our future. 

The design emphasizes the beauty of these fungi and open possibilities for exploring Bioluminescence as a new sustainable light source that one day could be used to illuminate the parks in our cities. 

Fungi, the greatest survivors in the planet, play an important role keeping our forest alive, offering medicinal properties and developing an underground web, so-called “wood wide web”. This subterranean social network is nearly 500 million years old and allows plants, trees and surrounding spices to be harmonically connected and exchanging nutrients within a symbiotic relationship.

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
The artwork “RELEASE” by Clarissa Concilio and Paolo Rota expresses the wish of freedom, determined by the current situation with COVID-19. This feeling is not only a physical need of going out and be back to normality, but it also emphasizes the journey that each of us went and is going through during the lock-down.

The experienced physical constraint led the mind soaring in different manners, finding new ways of escaping the reality and unchain itself. From this, the name RELEASE: the need of liberating ourselves. The installation intensifies this call for physical and spiritual freedom with a spontaneous luminous stroke that illuminates with warm light the surrounding area during the darkest hours of the city. LED flexible tubes are mounted and fixed on a structure that develops on top of the swings’ wooden constructions: the visitors will be able to experience the installation from a distance or enjoying it while sitting on the swings.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Clarissa and Paolo have been designing together lighting installations for a few years already: for example, they designed the installation Elementa for Copenhagen Light Festival 2019. Clarissa Concilio is an Italian lighting designer based in Copenhagen.She holds a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design from Politecnico di Milano (Milan, Italy) and a Master’s degree in Lighting Design from Aalborg University (Copenhagen, Danmark).

Clarissa is currently working as lighting designer at Rambøll, a leading engineering, architecture and consultancy company. Paolo Rota is an Italian lighting designer based in Copenhagen. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Product Design from Politecnico di Milano (Milan, Italy) and a Master’s degree in Lighting Design from Aalborg University (Copenhagen, Danmark). Paolo is currently working as product manager at Graduateland.  In his free time, he keeps his passion for lighting design alive.

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
‘Reflex as an involuntary and nearly instantaneous movement in response to stimulus, responding and constantly changing in the environment.’

REFLEX is a dynamic contextual artwork that responds to its immediate surroundings by creating a subtle light play, constantly appearing and disappearing by the waterfront of Gammel Strand. Hundreds of swaying prismatic pieces change their expression throughout the day and night, reflecting elements from its environment – the daily rhythm of the changing wind, daylight and movements of the cityscape. The two reactive clusters are also mimicking the flocking behaviour of fish, creating a dazzling effect of instantaneous analogue movement and reflecting on the history of the location. The kinetic installation highlights the scale of the architectural space, not seeking but acquiring attention from the viewer. REFLEX consists of two rhombus shaped squares containing a total of 624 highly reflective prismatic medallions.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mariliis Kundla
Mariliis Kundla is an Estonian M.Sc. lighting designer and audiovisual artist. As an artist, she is exploring the medium of light through the prism of her versatile background, merging research based lighting design and new media arts. Her goal is to create unforgettable atmospheric experiences – allowing the audience to explore light art and come to a dialogue with the space. Over the past years, Mariliis has been a part of numerous local and international large scale light installations, concert scenography and media production projects. She is the founder of KUMA Studio and the co-founder of Spectra & Space – a newly established lighting design studio based in Copenhagen. Mariliis was also the co-creator of the multisensory light installation “Solaris” exhibited at Reffen for Copenhagen Light Festival 2020. / www.mariliiskundla.com

Sofia Ivarsson
Sofia Ivarsson is a Swedish lighting designer and artist who aspires to create experiences of beauty and function with a subtle awareness of physical phenomena and respect for human needs. Sofia has been based in Copenhagen for 10 years and is part of a growing landscape of creatives working in the intersection between lighting design and light art across the Nordics. Her work ranges from theatre productions and large scale light installations to development of light festivals and experimental exhibition and workshop formats. She runs her own studio Noga and is also part of the designer duo behind The Time Travel Agency – a future-oriented research and design studio. / www.nogastudio.dk

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
Area renewal Bavnehøj, a part of Copenhagen Municipalty, presents a site-specific light work by the design studio byen sover at the cultural-historical gem Østre Kapel in the middle of Vestre Kirkegård. A large chandelier with a diameter of 3.5 meters transforms the chapel’s forecourt into a warm and wonderful common room which can seem both alluring and solemn to the individual, but also gather the cemetery’s guests on cold and biting days.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the chandelier’s ornamented screens, which turn the chapel upside down by reflecting spatial fantasies and fragments of the cultural and theater activities one can experience in the disused chapel. The light from the crown reflects the surroundings, and the light thus becomes a link between nature and the chapel. The light work is both intended as an enticing and enigmatic endpoint for the cemetery’s passing cyclists and runners, but also a warm and inviting space for the cemetery’s visitors, which encourages recreational stays and immersion.

Every 20 minutes, the light work is accompanied by an acoustic backdrop, which enhances the solemnity of the light work.

The lightwork can be experienced during the cemetery’s opening hours at 7-19. The work is part of  Områdefornyelse Bavnehøj’s study of Østre Kapel potential as a local meeting spot.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
The design studio Byen sover consists of the architects Jens Kamp and Karin Bech. Their work ranges widely from exhibition architecture to work with light in the form of lamps and light installations, often in the public space. A fascination in darkness of the city, and how stories can help change our perception of the city, is an important driving force for the design studio, whose work revolves around the interplay between city and nature and between fiction and reality.

ABOUT THE WORK
LUMINARIUM is a kinetic light art performance composed of light choreography, light performance and light video documented through photography, film and live video performance. This performance of light for the lens can be experienced through the museum’s facade windows on weekend evenings during Copenhagen Light Festival 2021. The aim of Luminarium as a visual language is to focus on the silent, moving image as a basic form of social communication and thereby promote meaningful artistic gesturing in a time marked by urban light noise. Lighting performances have always been associated with fascinating and extravagant experiences – both in analog and digital eras – and are driven by lighting artists with an astonishing energy to take new paths, explore new techniques and tools, and maintain the genre’s place in art history.
According to art historian Frank Popper, the development of light art is linked to the aesthetic considerations associated with technological progress. With LUMINARIUM, Laterna Magica Museum for Visual Knowledge wants to introduce a different aesthetic experience in the public space and revive a spellbinding genre within artistic light production.

The show is performed by Laterna Magica Museum for Visual Knowledge in collaboration with its network of artists known for experimenting with light choreography, light performance, and light video.

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
During the winter of 2020-21, temporary facade lighting has been installed at HOFOR’s new, sustainable combined heat and power plant at Amagerværke.

The facade lighting marks the end of the construction period, where the power plant block has been standing like a dark block on the Copenhagen skyline. Now the subdued lighting makes the work and the spectacular facade of tree trunks visible in the evening hours. When the light is gradually switched on at dusk, the plant will be visible from large parts of the city until midnight, when it will slowly go out again.

The current, temporary lighting is an overture to the permanent lighting installation, designed by the power plant’s architects Gottlieb Paludan Architects in collaboration with British lighting designers Speirs Major. The future light installation will be dynamic and mobile with light that will flow slowly across the tree trunks of the facade and clarify the structure and depth of the trunks at night.

The permanent lighting installation will be carried out when it becomes possible for the British lighting designers to travel to Denmark again.

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK
This year has been particularly challenging for everyone! It is therefore very poignant that after many failed attempts over the years to have Winter lights in the Nørre quarter, that this year proved successful. In what we imagined might be the darkest Winter ever in our historic area, we fought hard and managed to get our community-based project across the line.

However, midway through this project, we realized why this had never been previously achieved!

Various unforeseen obstacles included obtaining permissions from each individual building owner, endeavouring to obtain permits from Slots- and Kulturestylesten for the large amount of listed buildings covering the area of Studiestraede, Larsbjørnsstræde, Teglgårdstræde, and Kattesundet and also getting our diverse mix of local business on board during a global pandemic and economic downturn.

The success of this Winter light project has afforded us a new closer network among business and the local residents association. Together we now have more knowledge and information about who works and lives in our area.

We will endeavour to use this success as a springboard to work together collaboratively on more exciting projects in the future. We hope that those who pass through our area to see the lights will come to our area again and celebrate the perseverance and dynamism of our cherished neighbourhood.

Quetzalcoatl means feathered serpent, he was the most powerful god in Mesoamerica among the Teotihuacan, Mexica, Toltec, Olmec, and Mayan cultures (where he was known as Kukulcan).

For contemporary Mexico, it represents the greatness of indigenous cultural heritage and pays homage to the 700 years of the Mexico-Tenochtitlan foundation.

The lighting of the Embassy of Mexico windows is intended to represent the duality of this deity, the physical representation as an animal-man and the spiritual in the feathers.

The snake is constantly moving, while its feathers reflect the colors of the pre-Hispanic cultures of Mexico. Therefore, it is the source of inspiration to participate in the Copenhagen Light Festival.
